WENCHI CRATER LAKE

The Wenchi Crater Lake is a vast and beautiful natural wonder sheltered by breathtaking hills and rural villages. The lake is situated in Oromia Region, 155 km west of Addis Ababa,

This peaceful area is a popular destination, especially for tourists from Addis in need of some peace and tranquillity, who come to enjoy the horse riding and relaxed walks, bask by the crystal clear waters, or simply indulge in the spectacular view.

As part of an ethical and sustainable approach to tourism, the Wenchi Eco-Tourism Association (WRTA), a local initiative, is promoting this beautiful area in order that visitors can experience Ethiopia at its most unspoilt and magnificent aspect, and that the local community as a whole can benefit from tourism.

Among the many activities available at Wenchi are:

  • horseback riding
  • small boat trips
  • walks in the crater area and along the crater rim

Getting there:

An asfalted road (125 km) brings you from Addis Ababa to Ambo in two hours, plus a 30 km (40 minute) drive to the lake through verdant countryside along a gravel road. A 4x4 or other appropriate vehicle is suggested for the journey.

Optional:

  •  Swimming in thermal swimming pool in Ambo. Stay at the Ethiopia hotel.
  • Visit the project ASRAT for Ethiopia where two Belgian ladies, Annie and Emy teach and take care of 80 orphans and semi-orphans.
