Aksum

Aksum is undoubtedly one of the most important and spectacular ancient sites in sub-Saharan Africa.
Ancient stelae, thombs, a mausoleum and an archeological museum pepper the area.

A rough walk from the road, 3km west of Aksum, leads to the Lioness of Gobedra. It’s worth a visit, especially since it’s so close to the ancient quarries of Aksu

Lalibela

An ancient world, including 11 magnificent medieval rock-hewn churches, dimly lit passageways, hidden crypts and grottoes, carved down into the red volcanic rock, underly this remote Ethiopian town almost a millennium ago. Today that world still remains, frozen in stone.

On a breathtaking road, 45 km from Lalibela in the countryside, arises the Yemrehanna Krestos, a remarkably beautiful structure built in typical Auxumite style within a cave.
